About This Project

This website is a resource dedicated to exploring biological species data with a focus on vernacular names. The goal is to provide a clean, fast, and accessible interface for anyone interested in the biodiversity of their region. We came up with the idea when we were creating thousands of vernacular names on iNaturalist and frustrated it was not easily accessible to people via a Google search.

All the data presented here, including species names, taxonomy, and images, is sourced from iNaturalist. iNaturalist is a global community of naturalists, citizen scientists, and biologists built on the concept of mapping and sharing observations of biodiversity across the globe. We are immensely grateful to this community for making their data openly available.

The images displayed for each species are selected through an automated process that prioritizes high-quality, "research grade" observations with open licenses (like Creative Commons). Credit for each image is always provided with a link back to the original observation on iNaturalist.
